Organizing your Closet

In 2015, one of my organizing goals is to simplify. I’ve found that a lot of the clutter in my apartment comes directly from items I just don’t need or use. I hold onto things because they were gifts, or because I think I’ll use them, but the reality is–I never do. So many things have been sitting in the back of my closet unworn for years. I mean it–years. I’ve been holding onto those sparkly tops and mini skirts from college that saw me through some great times, but I sadly haven’t worn since.

But the deed is done–I got rid of almost three garbage bags worth of clothes, bags and jewelry. My closet didn’t undergo a complete aesthetic transformation, but I have simplified, purged and streamlined. Here’s what it looked like before:

And here’s my closet after:

It’s not exactly a groundbreaking difference, but some minor improvements have made a big difference.

I started by getting rid of anything I haven’t worn in the past year. I tried to be really honest with myself. Do I wear this to work? Do I wear this on weekends? Can I remember the last time I’ve worn this? Just this step alone made a huge improvement to the overcrowded feeling of the closet.

Second, I organized all of my hangers so that all similar garments had the same hanger. I know it kind of sounds OCD, but when you have all of the same hanger, all of your clothes hang at the same height, and it creates a streamlined look to the closet.

If I wasn’t on a budget and Matt didn’t make a point about how wasteful it is to get rid of all of our hangers, I would invest in some Huggable Hangers, but it’s not happening right now, so I worked with what I had. Here’s what the result looks like:

2015-01-03 14.42.06I just love looking at all the hangers and how they all hang evenly (for the most part). It makes me giddy (don’t judge).

I also realized that I wasn’t taking full advantage of all of the space. We have a full walk in closet and I was still folding things in plastic drawers I had from college instead. Why? I don’t know. I’m ashamed, so ashamed.

Another thing that made a big difference was organizing all of my garments by sleeve length AND color. I started with sleeve length to divide the closet into sections, such as sleeveless, short sleeves, long sleeves, cardigans, sweaters, blazers and jackets and dresses. On the lower level I have sweatshirts, casual sweaters, trousers and skirts. After I had everything split into sections, I started by putting each in color order, kind of rainbow style, kind of not. I just followed whatever pattern flowed best with the colors in that section. The results are magical.

I folded all of my jeans (after I got rid of almost half) and got some small bins for things that don’t fold nicely and neatly on shelves like tank tops, cotton shirts and nightgowns.

I found these bins in the office section at ” target=”_blank”>Home Goods, after having a lot of trouble finding something to fit the space and wasn’t wicker or straw material. They are perfect at clearing the clutter, hiding messy folding and function great. The handles give them the feeling of small drawers.

Jewelry hangs on hooks on the front wall, and bags hang on a small coat rack in back.

The look of my closet didn’t change a whole lot, but the feeling when I walk into it certainly did. I can really see everything I have. It feels like I’m going shopping in my own closet, I love it!
